Making patterns
Math Curriculum
Math concepts and skills are approached in a way to enable students to encounter math in a meaningful way through the use of manipulative materials (concrete) before progressing to pictorial and abstract representations. This methodology encourages logical thinking and problem solving skills. The program is also rich in mathematical vocabulary to enhance learning. Throughout the year, concepts such as number sense, sorting and classifying patterns, identifying shapes (2-d and 3-d), non-standard measurement, time and money are introduced. We continually spiral back to concepts to help ensure retention, mastery, and expansion. Spiral progression is also used to introduce new concepts. We also teach simple computation. In addition to our whole group math instruction, the students engage in a variety of hands on activities in math centers.
